Unlimited Mobile Data Plans In Danger

AT&T has just announced that the all-you-can-eat data plan has been removed from the buffet. A small percentage of heavy iPhone users are causing slow performance on the network for everyone. You knew this was coming because it is a losing proposition to try and feed the bandwidth demand of the heavy users, which represent less than 2% of all users. Now, the heaviest users will pay the most for data usage and this is a better model for everyone.

Starting on Monday, new customers will have the option to pay $15 a month for 200 megabytes, or $25 for 2 gigabytes with additional charges for more usage. Existing unlimited data plan users will have the option to keep their existing plan. Considering that 65% of the smartphone users on the network use less than 200 megabytes and 98% averaged less than 2 gigabytes, it may be a cost savings for existing users to switch to the new pricing plan.
